| US citizen traveling to Colombia I am currently on Colombia visiting with my US citizen wife and son. I am myself an US citizen but I was born in Colombia. When I went through Colombian immigration they told me that I need a Colombian passport to leave the country, the problem is that I have lived in the US since I was 12 (23 years ago) and have since changed my name and do not have anything to identify me in Colombia. Do I need a Colombian passport to leave the country or is there any other info I need? |

Why not ask at the closest DAS office? Are you near the city you were born? You should be able to get a copy of your Colombian birth certificate easily. Where is the passport office near you? What do you need for that? Probably a Colombian Cedula... so I'd start at DAS. |

Main issue with that is that my name changed legally in the US so I do not have any way of identifying me with my new last anem. My main concern is if DAS can keep me here or how bad can it get when I'm leaving the country? |

Why don't you find out from DAS?Better to get your answers ahead of time and not at the gate when you are ready to board a flight. Most countries require that their citizens enter and exit with the passport from that country. I am a little surprised they let you enter on a US passport. You could also look into renouncing your Colombian citizenship. The last time I was in the Colombian Consul's office they had signs about that up (or reclaiming it after you renounced, but I didn't pay too much attention). My ex-wife (Colombian with all her papers in order) got her passport in 1/2 a day... so it's not necessarily difficult once your papers are in order. Your other choice of course is to go to the boarder and try to leave and see if they let you. If so, then when you get home contact the consulate and get all your papers in order through them. |
