Am considering a trip to Colombia with the possibility of retirement.

We love what we hear about the country.

Concerns ..We only speak English now but are happy to learn Spanish.

Can we get by for awhile during the learning curve

We are hearing good things about the safety policies in place..but hear about an occational kidknapping and expats traveling on remote highways.

Would love to find a little cottage a few miles from a nice city for

conveniences. Would that be safe or advisable.

Thanks for your responses

John I'm interested to know why you would recommend Bucaramanga, do you live there yourself or have you visited before? Are there many expats living there or what is it about the place that makes it recommendable?

I read this:

Bucaramanga, is a beautiful city which is known as the city of parks. It is the industrial and comercial center of the northeast section of the Country. Industry, commerce and services are the main sources of income for the municipality and there are numerous businesses dedicated to the production of beverages, cement, cigarettes, preserves, agricultural machinery, automotive parts, garment industry, footwear and chemical and pharmaceutical products.

Its strategic position as the main route to northeastern Colombia has contributed to its intense commercial activity. The municipality has many places of interest and it also has an important hotel infrastructure and offers its visitors modern shopping malls with all the modern conveniences.

Sounds like a busy place, but very heavy on industry....

The cost of living is low the weather is great never gets below 70F not very humid. Great parks low rent. You can live witha maid for #1500.00 in a nice secure area. I have been there 4 times and i love it. The economy is graet. Lots of places to see. 8 hours to the coast Santa Marta by car
