I'm getting ready for a whirlwind tour of South America. Where are the places in Bogota that Americans hang out?

Find where the night life is wild and very much active everyday then that's your place you are looking for.

Probably not. Remember the MOST kidnapped people in Colombia are Colombians.

BUT... are you going to act like an idiot? Show off like you have a lot of money? Flash your ATM cards around (ie: carry a wallet with 15 or 20 cards in it for all to see... GOLD, GOLD, GOLD GOLD)...

The most common kidnapping is probably the express kidnappings where you are taken to an ATM and unload all your cards.

2 years ago it was recommended in Bogota that you not flag a taxi down the street... as the driver might then stop and pick up your express kidnappers... I never had a problem there... and don't know if that's changed.
